A Must Read For Teachers And Pet Store Owners!
Los Angeles City Ordinance 53.42(d)
(d) No person shall sell, offer for sale, barter or give away any rabbits, baby chicks, ducklings, or other fowl under four weeks of age in any quantity less than six.
Due to the alarming number of domestic ducks hatched 12 at a time in school classrooms and the selling of ducklings at Easter time as temporary Easter basket toys for children, we are unable to take in every injured and abandoned domestic duck that is left abandoned in Los Angeles and surrounding counties. The numbers are astounding and overwhelming. Therefore, we are going after the contributing sources of this on-going atrocity to have the behavior stopped once and for all. We are focusing on educating everyone involved in this cruel cycle as well as the people in power to do something about it. We invite the animal-loving public to speak out on this issue whenever and wherever possible to bring this hideousness to an end.
"We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical, concept of animals...
We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err...
In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifts with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not breathern, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of earth."
- Henry Beston
The Lucky Duck Rescue & Sanctuary has been in continuous operation since 1991. Our loving facility is located in the foothills of Sun Valley, a northern suburb of Los Angeles, California.
We are the only facility in all of the Southwest that provides this vital service. We are a registered 501 (c) (3) non profit organization.
As of July 2009, our residents consist of 90 ducks, 3 geese, 4 muscovies, and one toeless umbrella cockatoo. Call ducks, Indian Runners, white Pekins are the most common of our rescues. All of these lovely creatures were brought in as rescues or were abandoned by their previous owners. We also have 4 chickens and 5 pigeons - our director has a problem saying "no" to birds in need.
